Addressing hate and racism in Canada

The rise of geopolitical tensions, misinformation, population growth, and economic challenges are placing significant strain on Canadians. These factors have collectively led to a noticeable increase in hate crimes. Moreover, societal tension and division are becoming more pronounced, making it difficult for communities to unite and find common ground. Addressing these issues requires effective countermeasures to foster unity and understanding. Without these efforts, building a cohesive and harmonious society will remain a formidable challenge.
On November 19th, The Globe and Mail hosted a half-day hybrid event to discuss the challenges of countering racism and shaping a positive future.

Rita Trichur, senior business writer and columnist with The Globe and Mail, and Mohammed Hashim, CEO & Executive Director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, opened the event with their remarks. This was followed by Lela Savic, Founding Editor-in-Chief of La Converse, who led a discussion on anti-Palestinian racism, antisemitism, and Islamophobia. Lela then moderated a panel on anti-Asian racism.
Next, Carla Beauvais, Entrepreneure sociale et directive générale de la Fondation Dynastie, hosted a roundtable where community leaders shared their lived experiences and stories. Rima Elkouri, Journaliste/Chroniqueuse, La Presse led a discussion on systemic racism in healthcare. Carla returned to conduct an interview on Canada’s Black Justice Strategy, followed by Rima facilitating a discussion on online hate and racism in the digital world.
Finally, Rita and Mohammed presented closing remarks, rounding out an important and captivating program.
